2023
I had the cool opportunity to collaborate with Bellota Films on their documentary Matrix Generation, broadcasted on the French TV channel ARTE. As someone who grew up watching The Matrix, a film that became a cult classic of my childhood, this project was particularly meaningful to me. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched the movie, so being able to contribute to a documentary that delves into the Matrix Generation felt like a full-circle moment.
The director Benjamin Clavel asked me to illustrate different chapters of the documentary, each corresponding to a distinct era of the Wachowskis: the late 70s, the 90s, the 2000s, and a vision of the future.
To contrast with the film and TV clips that make up the documentary, I aimed to create visuals that were richly textured and conveyed a raw, sketched quality. The illustrations needed to be filled with intricate details to capture the environments that shaped the Wachowskis' upbringing, showing how their work is a product of their era and inspirations. I experimented with a variety of brushes to achieve an ink brush effect that would bring a dynamic and handcrafted feel to the illustrations.
